About Morten Hallgren
When Morten and Lisa started Ravines in 2001, they were the only winery in the Finger Lakes with a Winemaker holding a formal degree and training from Europe and a winery pursuing a traditional winemaking approach – making exclusively dry, vinifera wines. Ravines quickly became regarded as a top wine destination in the Eastern USA and has consistently gained national awards, noteworthy press, high scores and international accolades.
Morten also pioneered the bone-dry, mineral-tinged Riesling style that has since become the flagship Finger Lakes wine to critical acclaim. In addition to Ravines success with dry white wines, they are also heralded for top terroir-driven red and refined, methode champenoise sparkling wines. The winery has grown significantly through the last 18 years, and while small on an international scale, Ravines owns 130 acres of prime estate vineyards.
The Ravines approach has been and will remain to pursue what Morten calls “Transparent Winemaking”: striving to grow the highest quality grapes while remaining good stewards of the land. To Ravines, this also means employing sustainable farming practices that limit erosion and maintain excellent vine-balance, with an eye towards organic practices. Ravines was chosen as Wine & Spirits Magazine Top 100 Winery of the World three times, the most recent in 2022.
Ravines Finger Lakes Dry Riesling, 2020
This Riesling is grown in limestone and shalestone soils on the steep slopes surrounding the Finger Lakes. A beautiful and succulent, dry riesling that delivers fresh and mouthwatering acidity with elegant ripe fruits and mineral finish will have you looking forward to the warmer weather.
James Suckling, 93 points
For an entry-level wine this is a stunner! Wonderful nose of white peach, lemon blossom and jasmine. So succulent, with excellent ripeness and concentration, but nothing flashy or any hint of opulence. The best thing about the wine is the long, very silky finish. And this is properly dry.

From an excellent vintage and an equally acclaimed producer, this is an opulent and appealing bottling from first sniff. Gentle lamp oil and candlewax notes weave between green apple and lemon rind. The palate is crisp and dry, with less upfront fruit but a lovely tang of citrus acidity, a stony minerality and a waxy texture to the finish. It’s a bargain for the quality.
Ravines Chardonnay, 2020
Textbook, cool-climate chardonnay. Intense and aromatic, with meyer lemon, white flowers and hints of nutmeg. Ripe mango and pear melds with a stony minerality on the palate, both elegant and creamy with subtle spices.
Ravines Gewurztraminer, 2021
“This straw colored Gewurztraminer from the Finger Lakes opens with a fragrant and attractive lychee and ginger blend with hints of lemon. On the palate, this wine is medium plus bodied with medium acidity. The flavor profile is a stony mineral and lychee blend with notes green tea. I also detected hints of white pepper and ginger. The finish is dry, and its flavors and acidity fade away nicely. I would pair this Gewurz with a Thai chicken coconut curry. Enjoy” – Ken’s Wine Rating: Very Good (89)
“Dynamic aromatics of Asian pear, mango and sweet spices jump from the glass. Quintessential balance is paramount to this wine's fresh and vibrant mouthfeel. The acidity is fully integrated for such a young wine, providing verve and staying power on the dry finish.” Winemaker Notes
Ravines Cabernet Franc, 2021
100% estate, sustainably grown Cabernet Franc from our White Springs and 16 Falls Vineyards. Incredibly fresh and inviting with aromas of redcurrant, cranberries and mountain herbs. The palate is pure and elegant, with notes of raspberries and hints of earth and spice. A perfect rendition of Finger Lakes Cabernet Franc, aged for a year in our 6-year-old, 2000 liter Austrian and Hungarian Oak casks.
Wine Enthusiast, 92 points
There are some charred meat and mushroom undertones to this plump brambly berried Seneca Lake Cab Franc, with a dried herbal edge. Lovely plump cherry fruit concentration balances the tart acidity and austere, sappy tannins on this midweight red that’s perfect for in-between-season sipping.
Ravines Late Harvest Vignoles, 2015
Our Late Harvest Vignoles shows all of the classic characteristics of a Botrytis dessert wine: amber color resulting from the high level of Botrytis, intense fruity aromas as well as typically associated with this type of wine and a long, complex taste that lingers for several minutes. The high acidity level resulting both from the Vignoles grape variety and the Botrytis provides a welcome balance to the residual sugar.
